Knitting Basics: Socks (Week 3)

Join knitter Tanya Ehrsam to learn the fundamentals of sock knitting. Whether you're a beginner or have some knitting experience, this class will teach you how to create your very own pair of comfortable, hand-knit socks from start to finish.

Students will learn basic techniques such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, and creating the various parts of a sock. Students will be able to purchase their own yarn, so it suits their taste. A simple version of a Vanilla Latte sock pattern will be followed, with instructor guidance and homework built into the four-session course.

By the end of this class, you will have a beautiful, custom pair of socks made with your own hands and the confidence to tackle more advanced sock patterns in the future!

Watercolors 101 (Week 3)

If you have always wanted to test the waters of this medium, join watercolor artist and instructor Cheryl Meyer in this introductory four-week skill-building class. You’ll learn essential needle felting techniques, including how to shape, layer, and embellish wool roving to create soft, sculptural forms. Linocut Printing: Tote Bags (Week 1)

Learn a new skill while creating functional art in the form of linocut printing. Instructor Emily Gunning will guide students in designing and carving linoleum blocks to utilize for printmaking. Once your block is ready, you’ll learn how to apply ink and use printing techniques to transfer your artwork onto a tote bag, creating a decorative and unique bag for everyday use. Upcycled Mitten Workshop

Don’t throw those shrunken wool sweaters away! Reuse your old clothing to make functional art in the form of upcycled mittens. Felted wool is perfect for sewing into these fun and funky mitts, which are naturally easy to care for and above all, warm. Instructor Kim Bigard will guide you in laying out your pattern, cutting pieces and machine stitching them to make durable winter wear. Students are welcome to bring any old wool sweaters they wish to cut up, and we will have an assortment of pieces available to choose from. The pattern can also be utilized with fleece fabric, so students can choose either way. You are welcome to bring your sewing machine, however we will have a few on hand to share. Beginners are welcome.

Kids & Culture

GreenTree Co-op Market will host March's Kids & Culture from 10 am until noon on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 410 W. Broadway in downtown Mt. Pleasant. Participants will be tasting interesting international treats and talking about the different ways that food is grown and moved around the world.

GreenTree is a cooperatively owned grocery store with the goal to provide healthy, earth-friendly food that meets high-quality standards and to provide information and education to the people of Mid Michigan. They believe in supporting local farmers and producers, and in helping people to make informed choices about their own health and their impact on the greater environment.

Kids & Culture is free, family-friendly programming on the 2nd Saturday of each month. The programming is focused on bringing cultural opportunities to kids. Each event features hands-on activities, free admission, and the opportunity to learn more about featured art, music, dance, and so much more!

Goat Milk Soapmaking Workshop

Instructor Samantha Falsetta of C+S Farm will show you how to create your own silky smooth cold process soap. Using fresh goat milk from her farm, you will be provided with all the ingredients, supplies, and instructions to begin your journey in soapmaking and have a homemade 1lb batch of soap to take home. Students will get to select from an assortment of fragrances and colors to make for a luxurious bathtime experience. Emphasis will be placed on the safe handling of materials, as cold-process soap utilizes lye for the saponification process. Please note, students should come with long-sleeved clothing and closed-toe shoes.

Bookbinding 101 (Week 1)

Are you looking for a creative outlet that can be utilized in a number of art forms?  Instructor Kim Bigard will guide you in exploring the art of bookbinding.  Books can be created for many artistic outlets: journaling, creative writing, sketchbooks, garden journals, and more!  In this class, you can expect to learn basic pamphlet stitch binding, stab binding, and Coptic stitch binding.  This is a great way to use interesting paper and ephemera you have collected, including handmade paper.  Students are welcome to bring their favorite paper, however all tools and supplies will be provided.

Club Create is a Michigan Arts Access program for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Plein Air at the Greenhouse

If winter has you down, feel refreshed with a dose of greenery and painting. Cheryl Meyer will lead you through the art of watercolor painting “en plein air” at Central Michigan University’s Greenhouse, for a serene atmosphere away from the winter chill. She will guide you in the best practices of watercolor painting while demonstrating how to capture the light and composition that makes plein air so special. Students should bring a camp chair, preferably with a cup holder. All painting supplies will be provided.

This class will be held from 1-3 pm Friday, February 14, at the CMU Greenhouse. The Greenhouse is located between Brooks Hall and the Dow Science Building. Bookbinding 101 (Week 2)

Are you looking for a creative outlet that can be utilized in a number of art forms?  Instructor Kim Bigard will guide you in exploring the art of bookbinding.  Books can be created for many artistic outlets: journaling, creative writing, sketchbooks, garden journals, and more!  In this class, you can expect to learn basic pamphlet stitch binding, stab binding, and Coptic stitch binding.  This is a great way to use interesting paper and ephemera you have collected, including handmade paper.  Students are welcome to bring their favorite paper, however all tools and supplies will be provided.

Quilted Tote Bag Workshop

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for a fun and creative workshop assembling a quilted tote bag. Both artistic and functional, you can play with colors, and patterns, and learn simple construction techniques to machine sew your tote bag together. This is a great way to use scraps and fat quarters of various fabrics. Whether you have some quilting experience or are a beginner, all can learn something new and hone your sewing skills. Students will be provided a supply and fabric cutting list. If you have a sewing machine, you are welcome to bring one. However, we will provide a few machines for students to share.

Mastering the Portrait: Graphite to Oil (Week 1)

Instructor Matthew Grimmer will lead this six-week course in rendering portraits in graphite and oil. During the first 3 weeks, students will learn the basics of oil painting and capturing a subject from life. This involves learning brush handling and technique, simple color mixing, and learning to accurately draw from observation.  During the last 3 weeks, students will use these skills to create a portrait from a live, clothed model, with instruction and critique throughout the process. Gesture Drawing Workshop

Instructor Matthew Grimmer will guide students in learning to use loose and energetic linework to create a portrait from a live model. Gestural drawing focuses on using light, quick linework which is used for rapidly capturing one's subject; often "suggesting" shapes and features rather than meticulously drawing them. We will make numerous practice drawings that will involve fully rendering our model in only a matter of minutes. After, students will be focusing on a longer drawing that will have a more finished render. This drawing class is open to any experience level.

The Fundamentals of Drawing is a series of four 12-week skill-building courses with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky, designed to teach you to draw from the ground level. You’ll be provided a solid foundation in the essential techniques that every artist needs to know, and help you develop much more advanced skills that can help enhance your art vocabulary, and painting skills, or possibly get you into juried shows.

Beginning Colored Pencils is an in-depth, skill-building class with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. She will teach you how to effectively use artist-quality colored pencils, by exploring how to layer and blend using color theory as the backbone of the techniques learned. Fundamentals of Drawing 2 (Week 9)

This is the second course of four in the Fundamentals of Drawing series with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. This course will build upon the skills learned in course 1 to further advance your technical art skills. Participants will learn how to utilize tools to sharpen their skills in drawing. You will learn more about observation with site measuring. Students will also learn technical skills in using grids, their many uses as a tool, and how it assists in portrait drawing, as well as one & two-point perspective drawing.

Club Create is a Michigan Arts Access program for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Mastering the Portrait: Graphite to Oil (Week 2)

Instructor Matthew Grimmer will lead this six-week course in rendering portraits in graphite and oil. During the first 3 weeks, students will learn the basics of oil painting and capturing a subject from life. This involves learning brush handling and technique, simple color mixing, and learning to accurately draw from observation.  During the last 3 weeks, students will use these skills to create a portrait from a live, clothed model, with instruction and critique throughout the process. Each week, students will progress on their previous painting, using a layer-by-layer method.

The Fundamentals of Drawing is a series of four 12-week skill-building courses with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky, designed to teach you to draw from the ground level. You’ll be provided a solid foundation in the essential techniques that every artist needs to know, and help you develop much more advanced skills that can help enhance your art vocabulary, and painting skills, or possibly get you into juried shows.

Fundamentals of Drawing 1 starts the process at the ground level, teaching you how to go about handling the nervousness and the fear of making a mistake, moving on to contour line drawing, observation, and its importance to the drawing process. This course also teaches technical knowledge such as layering, understanding values, highlights and shadows, and negative space. Figure Drawing for Beginners (Week 3)

Join instructor Matthew Grimmer for an exploration of the human form. In this 6-week course, students will learn the elements of drawing from a live model. We will learn to capture the essence of the figure using charcoal on paper, starting with simple “stick-figure” compositions before finally moving to complete line drawings of the nude figure. This course has much to offer for both beginning and experienced artists. We will focus on capturing the figure through a variety of methods, which by the end of this course will leave students feeling confident drawing a completed figure whether given two minutes or two hours.

Toddlers (and parents!) are invited to join us for Wee Wednesdays! Wee Wednesdays is a bi-monthly program held from 10 to 11 am on the first and third Wednesday of the month. Beginning Colored Pencils is an in-depth, skill-building class with acclaimed artist and instructor Julie Tyslicky. She will teach you how to effectively use artist-quality colored pencils, by exploring how to layer and blend using color theory as the backbone of the techniques learned. This class does not specifically teach basic drawing techniques (other than how to shade a sphere), therefore an understanding of basic drawing and greyscale values is advised but not necessary. If you are a beginner, don’t worry! Students will learn to draw spheres and eggs primarily as subject matter in a hands-on and in-depth manner through assignments and in-class discussions.

Natural Techniques in Oil Painting

Join instructor Matthew Grimmer in learning some of the techniques used by the "old masters."
He will discuss using safe materials, and natural alternatives to harmful products. Students will each make their own "water-washed linseed oil" using a technique involving flaxseed oil, salt, and water, which the students can take home. Lastly, you will learn to mix and utilize skim milk in your oil painting as an alternative to paint thinner. While learning these techniques, students will be creating still-life paintings in order to demonstrate the said techniques. Workshop open to all experience levels.

Whether your child is a budding artist or simply loves to get their hands messy, we will provide a variety of fun and engaging activities to spark their creativity.

Throughout the week, campers will experiment with different art forms, including painting, sculpture, fiber arts, mixed media, and more. Each day will feature new projects, allowing kids to explore their artistic abilities, to think outside the box and take artistic risks.

By the end of the week, your child will have a collection of finished art projects to take home and share with family and friends. This is an excellent opportunity for kids to make new friends, explore their creative potential, and have a blast during spring break!

Sewing for Kids

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for an introduction to machine sewing. Students will be led in creating a simple pillowcase or owl rice pillow on a sewing machine. Students will learn the steps of reading a pattern, selecting and cutting their fabric, and assembling pieces. All supplies and machines will be provided, however students may bring their fabric of choice if desired.

This workshop will be held 12:30-3 pm, Monday, March 24 in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

If students want to bring their fabric, they will need 1 yd of quilter cotton or flannel and 9 inches of contrast fabric for the pillow case, and 9 inches or a fat quarter of cotton fabric for the owl rice pillow.

Quilted Table Runner Workshop: Mums the Word

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for an introduction to patchwork quilting. Following a Mums the Word, students will learn how to cut and piece their table runner top, layer batting, and backing, and finish by quilting. You will leave with a functional piece of art that can be used any time of year, depending on the color scheme. You will be provided a supply list with yardage needed of cotton fabric so the project can be suited to your taste.

Spring Break Art Camp (Day 4)

School is out and it’s time to let your creativity soar! Let your young artist spend their week indulged in arts and crafts at our Spring Break Art Camp with instructor Kim Bigard! Whether your child is a budding artist or simply loves to get their hands messy, we will provide a variety of fun and engaging activities to spark their creativity.

Quilted Table Runner Workshop: Flights of Fancy

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for an introduction to patchwork quilting. Following a basic pattern called Flights of Fancy, students will learn how to cut and piece their table runner top, layer batting, and backing, and finish by quilting. You will leave with a functional piece of art that can be used any time of year, depending on the color scheme. You will be provided a supply list with yardage needed of cotton fabric so the project can be suited to your taste.

This workshop will be held from 1-5 pm, Friday, March 28 in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

A limited number of sewing machines will be available to students. If students have a machine they wish to use, please bring it to class. A basic understanding of sewing machine use is helpful.

Mastering the Portrait: Graphite to Oil (Week 4)

Instructor Matthew Grimmer will lead this six-week course in rendering portraits in graphite and oil. During the first 3 weeks, students will learn the basics of oil painting and capturing a subject from life. Quilted Table Runner Workshop: Flights of Fancy

Join instructor Tanya Ehrsam for an introduction to patchwork quilting. Following a basic pattern called Flights of Fancy, students will learn how to cut and piece their table runner top, layer batting, and backing, and finish by quilting. You will leave with a functional piece of art that can be used any time of year, depending on the color scheme. You will be provided a supply list with yardage needed of cotton fabric so the project can be suited to your taste.

Club Create is a Michigan Arts Access program for adults with disabilities. Club Create provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to have hands-on experiences in the arts provided by professional artists. Club members participate in an art experience at each meeting, as well as have time to socialize with other club members. Knitting Basics: Socks (Week 2)

Join knitter Tanya Ehrsam to learn the fundamentals of sock knitting. Whether you're a beginner or have some knitting experience, this class will teach you how to create your very own pair of comfortable, hand-knit socks from start to finish.

Students will learn basic techniques such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, knitting in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, and creating the various parts of a sock. Students will be able to purchase their own yarn, so it suits their taste. A simple version of a Vanilla Latte sock pattern will be followed, with instructor guidance and homework built into the four-session course.

By the end of this class, you will have a beautiful, custom pair of socks made with your own hands and the confidence to tackle more advanced sock patterns in the future!

Ombre Dyed Macrame Plant Hangers

Join instructor and plant mom Kim Bigard for a creative session of macrame. Students will learn a few basic knots that can be utilized in a variety of ways to create artistic and imaginative macrame designs, and double as functional art. Students will complete a macrame plant hanger, and learn how to use fiber-reactive dyes to create an ombre effect for a colorful punch to their houseplants.
